More men reach the age of 100
Wednesday 15 September 2010
The number of male centenarians in the Netherlands has risen for the first time in years, the national statistics office CBS said on Wednesday.
At the beginning of this year, the Netherlands had 1,743 citizens who were aged over 100, up 115 on 2009.
One in seven centenarians is now male, the CBS said. Men account for 246 of the country's 100 plus residents, up from 210 a year ago.
The oldest woman in the Netherlands was born in 1901, the oldest man in 1902.

It is interesting to read about the increasing numbers of centenarians, whom I heartily congratulate. Yet, I would be more interested to learn the mean age of the population, this being a better index of the nation's grip on life.
Another interesting point would be to know whether these centenarians are happy with their lives, or are they simply vegetating?
I, for one, would be happy to be granted another lease of useful life, but would not be too excited about being a demented burden on others.
Life is precious and one should preserve it at all costs; but when we come to the final reckoning, it is not the length of one's life that matters, but its quality.
