Driving test to include sat nav systems

Thursday 16 September 2010

All driving school cars must be fitted with satellite navigation systems so learner drivers can be taught how to use them properly, the driving licence authority and driving school association have decided.

The sat nav systems must be in place by September 2011 so in-car navigation can be incorporated into the driving test.

Whatever next, why not make them read maps instead because all sat navs are different and very widely with age, maps remain the same. Another scheme to boost sales to help the taxman I think, nothing more. it encourages drivers to take their eyes off the road as ewell, how safe it that? Who on earth dreams these crazy ideas up? Answer- someone who is desperate to justify his job in a jacked up government department somewhere in den Haag....idiots!

Ummm.... why?

Maybe the management of the driving licence authority and driving school association have bought shares in TomTom.

It reminds me of my driving exam in the Netherlands when I was asked where the air conditioning button was on a driving instructor's car. I never use airco and have no interest in it.

Why waste time on such inane topics like sat-nav's? Better would be to make sure that drivers know how to jump start a battery, change a flat tyre or put water in the radiator. What I have seen here by experience is that many Dutch drivers haven't a clue and rely completely on the ANWB for such basics. Maybe they call the ANWB for driving directions too!

Very good idea, actually. First, new drivers can be taught to NOT manipulate them while driving. Although I use one constantly, especially in cities I am not familiar with, they can be quite infuriating if you don't have the correct information. To be able to use them properly is an important asset to have.

I disagree with Andy-maps are constantly out of date. Nav systems are easy to update via the internet.

Wont be long now till you have to get your license through TomTom! Corporate product placement in the Netherlands is doing its best to keep up with the USA. I cant wait to have to get my Heineken or Philips passport. Let the bidding commence.
