Draft bill gives police the power to test drivers for drugs

The caretaker government is submitting legislation to parliament today which will give police the right to give drivers on-the-spot tests for drugs, the AD reports.

The law will set legal limits for traces of illegal narcotics in saliva and allow police to carry out a simple test on drivers they suspect of being under the influence.
Drivers found with drugs in their system will have to give a blood test to determine accurate levels of drugs and then face prosecution.
The AD says according to Tilburg police estimates, some 20% of traffic related injuries involve drugs.
