Sail girl sets sail
Monday 23 August 2010
Laura Dekker, the 14-year-old girl who hopes to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world, set sail on Saturday from Gibraltar on the first stage of her voyage.
Dekker sailed from the Portugese harbour of Portimao, where the final preparations were made to her boat. She had planned to begin her voyage from Portimao but was stopped by local police, according to the AD on Monday.
The Portugese navy said on its website that Dekker did not have the correct documents to sail solo in a 38-foot Guppy. 'The young girl did not meet the necessary legal requirements to leave the harbour,' the website said.
Laura and her father set sail for Gibaltar, telling the police they were going to test the sails, says AD.
She is now heading solo for the Canary Islands.
