Sail girl loses tv contractWednesday 11 August 2010 Laura Dekker, the 14-year-old girl who hopes to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world, has lost her contract with Dutch production house Eyeworks. Eyeworks was negotiating with Dekker's business agents for an exclusive contract to film her during her two-year journey. On Wednesday the company said Dekker's representatives had increased their demands, reports the Telegraaf. Robert van den Boogaard of Eyeworks told the paper the company was prepared to make the investment necessary to film the trip but when extra money was demanded for the rights 'it became a matter of principle for us'. Dekker and her father are currently sailing to Portugal where her boat will undergo final preparations. She is expected to begin her solo journey after the Atlantic Ocean hurrican season ends sometime in December. © DutchNews.nl
In sane and asking for trouble. To allow such a young inexperienced girl of small slight stature to sail around the world solo there must be some huge financial incentive for the parents, are they just using Laura to provide them with their pension at the risk of her life? What for parents are they? Could they live with their daughters death if she had an accident after allowing this crazy thing to take place? The should be made to have full insurance ion place to cover the costs of any events that may leave the tax payer to pick up the bill for their greed and Well done Eyeworks for not going thru with this as well! By George | August 11, 2010 5:23 PM The family is getting greedy and now blew it. It sounds more like her father is doing it at his daughters expense. By Gerrit | August 11, 2010 6:06 PM Laura, her family and friends have had to work extremely hard in raising funds for this. I would not jump to conclusions, media companies have a great way of 'spin'. Good luck Laura! By G.Davies | August 11, 2010 10:33 PM Donaugh you are right the taxpayer shouldnt be hit in the pocket for a 14 year old wanting to set a record that isnt even official anymore. So if she gets into trouble tough. Shouldnt have been there. We need to remember that we have always had adventurers, thrill seekers, nutters or whatever you want to call them dong crazy things. Im pretty sure Columbus wasnt the first to set off for a new world and many of these were never heard from again. Stop the nanny state. If someone wants to do something stupid let them but dont molly coddle them if something goes wrong. Let them sort it themselves or not as the case maybe. Good luck Laura. By langer | August 12, 2010 9:59 AM Well done for keeping yet another reality show about a brat and her accessory 'pushy parent' off our screens. Let those people do what they want and suffer the consequences if thats how they choose to live. By osita | August 12, 2010 4:19 PM
