More passengers and freight at Schiphol

Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport processed more passengers and freight in the first six months of this year than a year ago, the Schiphol group said in a statement. Earnings were also up.

While the Icelandic volcanic eruption led to the airport’s closure for a time, the total number of passengers who used the airport went up 2% to 22 million. Cargo shipments rose nearly 22% to 719,000 tonnes.
Schiphol’s turnover fell 1.5% to €545m, but net earnings were up from €22m to €69m.
CEO Jos Nijhuis said the company is ‘reasonably satisfied’ with the results but not happy about the performance of the aviation division which booked an operational loss, largely due to security costs.
‘We are currently in discussion with our customers to seek a solution that gets us to a reasonably positive return whereby the tariff structure of our airport charges should support the continued development of the airport,’ he said.
