Last Dutch soldiers arrive home

Monday 09 August 2010

The last soldiers on active duty in Afghanistan arrived home in the Netherlands on Sunday afternoon.

They were welcomed back by acting defence minister Eimert van Middelkoop who thanked them for their efforts.

The Dutch had 2,000 solders and support staff in the Afghan province of Uruzgan, some of whom remain at Camp Holland to oversee the removal of equipment.

21 Dutch solders died during the mission.

Actually there are still a few hundred Dutch soldiers in Afghanistan. F-16 jets, Chinook, Cougar and Apache helicopters are still performing their tasks. The redeployment task force, which is responsible for maintaining and shipping out the military equipment, has recently been sent to Afghanistan. These units will be there for most of 2010 and probably a large part of 2011 as well.

In total 24 Dutch soldiers lost their life in Afghanistan since 2006.
