Dutch ambassador will attend Suriname ceremony – Update

Despite earlier comments from prospective foreign minister Winston Lackin, the Dutch ambassador in Suriname intends to attend the inauguration on Thursday of Desi Bouterse as president of the South American country.

A spokesman at the foreign ministry told NRC there was no reason for him not to go and pointed out that an official invitation had been received on August 3.
Earlier on Wednesday, Lackin told news agency ANP that since Bouterse is not welcome in the Netherlands, then the Dutch ambassador is not welcome at the ceremony.
Bouterse was sentenced to jail for drugs smuggling in the Netherlands but has never served his sentence.
