Ajax qualifies for Champions League

Thursday 26 August 2010

Amsterdam football club Ajax qualified for the Champions League group phase on Wednesday night with a 2-1 home win over Dynamo Kiev.

The first leg last week was a 1-1 draw.

Ajax' goals were scored by captain Luis Suarez (43rd minute) and new signing Mounir El Hamdaoui (73rd minute). A penalty in the 84th minute allowed Dynamo to pull one back but Ajax managed to hang on to the final whistle.

Money

According to the Telegraaf, the win will boost cash-strapped Ajax's financial position to the tune of €25m from Uefa fees and tv rights. Ajax posted a loss of €21m last season.

Ajax last qualified for Europe's top football competition in the 2005/2006 season. The draw for the group phase is on Thursday.
