Ajax qualifies for Champions League

Amsterdam football club Ajax qualified for the Champions League group phase on Wednesday night with a 2-1 home win over Dynamo Kiev.


The first leg last week was a 1-1 draw.
Ajax’ goals were scored by captain Luis Suarez (43rd minute) and new signing Mounir El Hamdaoui (73rd minute). A penalty in the 84th minute allowed Dynamo to pull one back but Ajax managed to hang on to the final whistle.

According to the Telegraaf, the win will boost cash-strapped Ajax’s financial position to the tune of €25m from Uefa fees and tv rights. Ajax posted a loss of €21m last season.
Ajax last qualified for Europe’s top football competition in the 2005/2006 season. The draw for the group phase is on Thursday.
