'We are ready to win the World Cup,' say jubilant Dutch papersSaturday 03 July 2010 The Netherlands' surprise victory over Brazil in the World Cup quarter finals on Friday afternoon dominates the newspaper front pages on Saturday. 'World Class,' screams the Telegraf above a photo of coach Bert van Marwijk which his arms stretched out in jubilation. 'Orange heros punish Brazil,' the paper says, above 11 match photos of the 11 winning players. 'The Dutch team has done the impossible at the cost of five time world champion Brazil,' reads the opening sentence. Secret The Parool headlined its front page 'Oranje cannot be beaten'. 'In the first half the Netherlands was overrun by Brazil but won 2-1 and reached the World Cup semi finals,' the paper stated. 'Oranje's secret has been revealed. The team cannot be beaten,' it continued, pointing out the Dutch squad has won all five World Cup matches so far. 'The Netherlands can believe in the world title,' the paper continues on the inside pages. 'Wesley Sneijder was the big man. The Inter star did what he promised. He decided the match.' Photo The Volkskrant has no news story on its front page, just a half page photo of Dirk Kuijt, Mark van Bommel and Arjen Robben with their arms round each other grinning from ear to ear and an unrelated column entitled 'Telephone sex'. 'Past Brazil on character' is the front page headline. Inside the paper asks: 'Can Oranje win the World Cup? They can. And they can play better too.' Friday's win is a win for everyone in a country with ambitions, the paper said. 'If you want something, you have to go for it,' it quoted Van Marwijk as saying. Ready 'Oranje is ripe for the maximum' says the normally-restrained Trouw in its coverage, under a photo of a jubilant Arjen Robben leaping on top of Dirk Kuijt. 'With a holy belief in their own ability, the team threw off their diffidence and worked to stop being behind,' the paper said. Trouw also sent a reporter to Schiphol airport where travelers were watching on a massive screen. 'There cannot be extra time or we will miss our flight,' said one, who had arrived at the airport early to watch the game. With four teams left, who is going to win the World Cup? Netherland vs Germany for the final. Netherlands to win it! Naturlijk!! By donaugh | July 3, 2010 5:33 PM My thoughts on football:
By stevie | July 4, 2010 1:24 PM not a chance, Uruguay will kick Dutch ass! By garchagrande | July 4, 2010 5:21 PM Well, if the Netherlands can beat Brazil ( five times world champion), this shows that the Netherlands has the ability and technical knowhow to beat any team for the world cup. All the Netherlands need to do is to think smart and pray hard. By cruff | July 4, 2010 5:23 PM congratulation neighboors By German | July 4, 2010 5:54 PM Hope you give Uruguay a good beating. I will be cheering for you (and against this Suarez guy...) Holland - Germany final would be so great greetings from Germany By Sauerkraut | July 4, 2010 6:05 PM This will be a good opportunnity to overun the German hordes. Once Holland was occupied by the Germans. Now it is the time to tell them we the Dutch are a land of Champions. By Hades | July 4, 2010 6:12 PM I hope Netherlands wins, but the four teams are so evenly matched. By John Bok | July 4, 2010 7:21 PM Also without Suarez... we will fight to the end... May the best team win! By Artigas | July 5, 2010 12:22 AM England second goal was valid and the German Goalkeeper should be honest to concede the second goal, but instead pretending it wasn't in. The Goalie is the epitome that Germany is a land of cheaters. Germany is not worthy of a land of the world champion. Germany if have the dignity, should pack and go home after the Germany and England match! By neeskim | July 5, 2010 9:51 AM Holland have been winners all the way and they deserve to win the the Wold Cup. The team have been great to watch By kate Rice - Ireland | July 5, 2010 10:18 AM We're all supporting you here in England. Go Netherlands!!!! Good luck By Mark | July 5, 2010 2:29 PM To See the dutch live in South Africa is wonderful, they will have to on there game to beat Germany By Corrie J | July 5, 2010 2:45 PM Well Played Netherlands. I saw the match and it was a wonderful team work. Please continue the same and Netherlands deserve to win the World Cup. By Hari Prasad | July 5, 2010 9:05 PM A Cheer for the Dutch on the day before the game. It brings back momories to 1974 and 1978. I hope that this time they will pull through. The Germans do look very dangerous but they have to beat Spain first and we can hope that the Dutch team has the ability to unnerve and ratle the Germans as the did the Brazilians. By Paul Bras | July 5, 2010 9:18 PM everyone in israel love holland and support her - since the days of kruyf 1974. By yoram | July 5, 2010 10:20 PM To be fair and realistic ... Dutch players like Robben should do a bit less acting and a lot more playing. Yep for the win against Uruguay ... but definitely not against the German ... so far they are the best attacking and overall team !! By booboo | July 6, 2010 7:11 AM All four teams have a chance to win the World Cup. But it is clear that Holland has come to the semifinals not in a spectacular way but in a much steady way winning all its matches with reasonable margins. The Netherlands has the best chance of becoming the champions this time. By jakc | July 6, 2010 9:04 AM Go Holland! I hope for a NL-DE finals! and in the process kicking out the cheating urugays By andrew | July 6, 2010 9:46 AM Full Marks to Holland... They are playing like Heroes..They really deserve for the World cup -2010. By Rajeshwar Dayal | July 7, 2010 10:51 AM The Dutch deserve to get the World Cup 2010, they have been outstanding and have worked hard. Spain is very good but I think the Dutch will win. They need to go in and unlike Germany, play with confidence and not lay back playing a defensive game. By jewelie | July 9, 2010 12:43 AM
