Temperatures soar ahead of Oranje Brazil World Cup showdown
With temperatures expected to soar into the mid 30s, spirits are already high ahead of the afternoon’s crucial World Cup match between the Netherlands and Brazil, the Telegraaf writes on Friday.
Oranje lost to the Brazilians in previous ties in 1994 and 1998, but many still remember the legendary 2-0 semi-final win in 1974, the paper says.
The match is the talk of the town, with the ANWB motoring organisation forecasting an early rush hour. Some 10 million people in the Netherlands are expected to watch the game.
Big screens
Because of the forecast heat, the public health body RIVM has warned crowds watching the match on big screens not to drink alcohol, and if they do, to drink plenty of water as well.
In Eindhoven, where 10,000 people are expected to gather to follow the game on a giant outdoor screen, the council is giving away free bottles of water. Big screens have also been set up on Amsterdam’s Museumplein and in Rotterdam.
One group of 40 school pupils will miss the match. The Cambreur College in Dongen has organised their high school graduation ceremony for 1600 hours and will not budge, the Telegraaf says.
