Homes evacuated as explosion sends asbestos flying
Tuesday 27 July 2010
Dozens of families in Amsterdam Noord have been evacuated from their homes because of the risk of coming into contact with asbestos following an explosion.
Bits of asbestos were blown onto the street and balconies when a gas explosion ripped through a nearby apartment on Sunday night.
A city council spokesman said the risk to health was low but that they wanted to take every precaution.
In total, 32 flats have been evacuated. The clean-up will take several days.
