Herring gulls to be hunted away from mussel beds

Friday 16 July 2010

herring gulls,mussel beds, Oosterschelde estuary

Zeeland provincial council has given the go ahead to plans to chase off and even shoot herring gulls which fishermen claim are damaging the mussel industry in the Oosterschelde estuary, local paper BN/De Stem reports.

The permit runs from July 1 to November 1 and allows 'occasional' shooting if necessary to make efforts to chase away the birds effective.

Herring gulls are a protected species in the Netherlands.

Shoot one protected species, only for fishermen - famous for fishing other species to extinction - to maximise profits from exploiting another? Is there too much salt in the air in Zeeland?

If they are allowed to shoot a protected species, then that species is not protected, so what is the point of classifying them as such?
