Coalition talks continue, out of the spotlight
Negotiators working to put together a new Dutch cabinet have called on the four party leaders taking part not to make detailed comments to the press about their progress and to stop using the microblog service Twitter, Nos tv reports.
The talks are best served ‘away from your cameras and spotlights,’ negotiator Uri Rosenthal told a news conference on Tuesday afternoon.
The parties – the VVD, Labour, D66 and GroenLinks – had their second day of negotiations on Tuesday. The election took place almost four weeks ago.
The aim of the talks is to produce a compact coalition agreement, outlining main policy strategy but leaving out the details. On Tuesday afternoon, the four parties’ financial specialists joined the party leaders at the negotiating table.
Foreign policy
On Wednesday a group of prominent members of the four parties called on the negotiators to make sure the new government has a strong foreign policy, focused on sustainability and combating poverty.
The letter is signed by former Rabobank chairman Herman Wijffels, VVD supporters and former ministers Joris Voorhoeve and Erica Terpstra and the former chairman of the FNV trade union federation Lodewijk de Waal.
The Netherlands’ welfare and security depend on stability and progress in developing countries, they said.
