Orca doing well, wellwishers name her MorganThursday 24 June 2010 The orca, or killer whale, rescued in the Wadden Sea on Wednesday evening is recovering well at the Dolfinarium in Harderwijk, news agency ANP reports. The orca has been named Morgan. 'It is a Scottish Celtic name and we chose it because she may well come from the north of Scotland,' a spokesman said. 'We are pleased with her progress so far.' © DutchNews.nl
Over the past 36 hours it looks like she has made brilliant progress, which I am happy to see. It is good to see that the dolfinarium is capable of looking after her better than Mexico did when they rescued an orca a few years back. I have been talking to some of my friends, and we think that releasing her is harder than people think. Personally I am against captivity, but this is the one time when, in the interests of the animal, and to give her the best chance of survival, I think she should go to MLF when she is recovered. I doubt she would be able to survive well due to her age in the wild. There is a big chance they won't be able to find her family. Putting her with a new wild pod might not work. Look at Keiko for an example. By Danny T | June 25, 2010 9:07 AM I, and with me many people on Facebook, are glad about Morgan's fast recovery and we wish her all the best! We all are looking forward to the moment when she will be released back into the ocean! By Helga Hansmann | June 25, 2010 11:08 AM I find it interesting that you think the orca may be part of the Scottish population. This should make finding her family easier and hasten the release of this wild orca. Personally I find the naming of the animal to be counter-productive as it is a wild animal and by 'naming' you are creating a pet animal. I look forward to the early release of this animal back into the wild. By Allan | June 25, 2010 12:48 PM Please, please give Morgan a chance to reunite with her family and live her life out the way she deserves. You have done amazing job so far in rehabilitating her, but the job is only half done until she is FREE. By Sally | December 10, 2010 9:49 PM Orcas belong in the wild, not in prison. I am so glad Morgan is recovering well in your Dolfinarium. To be helpful, Morgan is a Welsh name and the name is related to the sea.
Continued success with Morgan and in the World Cup.
