Embassy intervenes to help women caught in World Cup beer row

The Dutch embassy in Pretoria is intervening in the row over marketing between the world football body Fifa and Dutch brewing group Bavaria in an effort to make sure two Dutch women do not get jailed, Nos tv reports.

The two women, apparently hired in by Bavaria to promote their product in South Africa during the World Cup, are due to appear in court on Tuesday charged with undertaking commercial activities in a football stadium.
The women, and around 30 others with South African nationality, stripped off during last Monday’s match between the Netherlands and Denmark to reveal skimpy orange dresses which were given away free by the Dutch brewer.
The women were ejected from the stadium but arrested last Wednesday for breaking tough new laws on marketing introduced to protect official World Cup sponsors such as Budweiser.
They could face up to six months in jail.
