Council helps jobless women find a rich man to keep them

Tuesday 08 June 2010

The Frisian villages of Dongeradeel and Dantumadiel have come up with a novel way of cutting spending on welfare payments - encouraging jobless women to find a rich man, the Leeuwarder Courant reports on Tuesday.

The local social service departments are paying for the women to have a make-over in the hope they can hook up with a rich husband to support them, the paper says. If 70 women find a new husband, the council can save €400,000 on welfare payments.

The councils are putting €1,400 into each woman to have her hair done and get help with her image. They will also get their wardrobe updated and tips on social skills and presentation.

Once the transformation process has been completed, the women will be registered at a local marriage bureau Mens en Relatie in Oentsjerk, the paper says.

So far fewer than 10 women have signed up for the scheme, which is described as 'unethical' by locals. Taking part is completely voluntary, officials told the paper.

Fantastic!! I love it when people think!!

Wouldn't that same 1,400 euros pay for training so they can get a job? And exactly how many rich men live in Friesland?

Is this a joke?! Why isn't this money being invested in getting these women an education or some job training, or in building up local businesses so there are more jobs available for the residents? It's appallingly sexist that the council is singling (no pun intended) out women as the ones who need to be off the welfare payrolls. What about all of the men on welfare? What is the council doing about them?

I should hope the scheme is completely voluntary. That the government is trying to save money by trading their women in, so they can save on welfare is indeed a "novel" way to slavery and cutting spending. I hope the women in question have got a brain and realise what they have been framed to do and what the government expects of them. Why doesn't government try that with the unemployed men? They would be a lot more successful since men are a lot more prone to give and demand sex, even pay over the odds to get it anyway they can. Sorry, forgot men would still demand unemployment benefits from the government over and above it all. Exploitation of woman seems be a solution to civilised country's problems when they pay third world countries millions, billions, to make sure they treat their women in accordance with THEIR civilised values and humanely. Maybe you should keep the money which supposedly aids people, females and children abroad and use it in your country country to save women from yourselves

Are the councils dolling these women up to find a husband or to have them stand in windows in the red light district?

So Frisian women that are unemployed and need social security are ugly?

From what I observe on the street in Haarlem, some of them need a total makeover, and especially their teeth - add another €5.000 !!

Are you serious?? You encourage women to be gold diggers? How will this help their self esteem? How will this protect them from getting dumped by some jerk and having to be in the same situation all over again?? Why not help them learn a trade or get some education so they can support themselves and their children? God forbid. Dutch people are so incredibly arrogant. Yes I have heard the whole "If you aint Dutch you aint much" thing. How---I dated and was deeply in love with a Dutch man for several years but that whole arrogant thing got old. Now one of your own is facing murder charges for what is likely at least his second murder. You guys have cool shoes and you can smoke weed when you want but other than that.....whats up???

A make over, new clothes, help with presentations skills... I hope that's the confidence boost it takes to get these women applying and back INTO WORK. Sometimes that lift, that selfbelief, is all it takes in an interview to get the job - many of whom will have employment skills/experience from before life dealt them a bad hand of cards.

There is no harm in trialing new ideas with voluntary participation, no matter how flamboyantly the media choose to present them.

Rich men in Friesland? "Boer zoekt Vrouw" comes to mind - spend the cash on some sturdy boots for them instead :D

Wow, this doesn't sound like prostitution at all! Are these local councils or pimps? If a Middle Eastern country did this, people would be outraged at the treatment of women. But I guess it's totally fine when Western governments treat women like commodities. Marriage is not the ideal state of being nor is it a solution to every problem. Heaven forbid the money is used to actually help these women.

Is this a taboo subject in Holland? Smart Sophisticated women have been doing this for thousands of years. And men have been doing it a good hundred or so. I am male and I only date from a higher economic class. This the norm in the upper classes-Marry up the social ladder.

I cannot believe that this is happening anno 2010!!! Women should stand on their own two feet and support themselves. What happens when the rich guy eventually looks for someone else??? Will the council fork out another 1.400 euros for a second makeover?? This money should be spent on job training.

Probably just a stunt by local government to get the attention of the national government. "Hey guys! We're screwed down here! Don't have enough money to fund the welfare roles!" Not that it isn't a bit anti-feminist... Quite possible that helping with self-esteem or telling women how to be gold diggers is a bit of an over analysis of the situation.

By Jodster | June 9, 2010 10:35 AM

Not job training? A house wife does more work than most government workers.

I think it is a great idea. But it should also be available to men who want to find a women or man to support them.

Also, I think JD Brewer is a rather negative person and just doesn't like the Dutch any more.

This is a joke, right? And it's not even April Fool's Day. I understand anything goes in the Netherlands, but this? It's fantastic! Whoever thought of this idea should be fired and put in the social welfare. Probably needs a make-over as well with a new brain.

"Why not help them learn a trade or get some education so they can support themselves and their children?"

Get real, JD, we're talking about "The Frisian villages of Dongeradeel and Dantumadiel". You could have a Ph.D in Economics and couldn't get a job in these villages. The only realistic solution would be to give these women thousands of euros to relocate to Heerenveen or Leeuwarden where the chance of getting a decent job would be far more realistic.

Giving these women a make-over will, in any event, give a boost to their self-esteem and increase their chances of getting off benefit whether by getting a job or a rich spouse.

Anyway, I suspect that it's all a publicity stunt. Wait for the announcement from one of the RTL stations that they're launching a new reality show with - guess what the theme will be...
