Cabinet negotiator turns to left-centre-right option

Wednesday 23 June 2010

Cabinet negotiator Uri Rosenthal will on Wednesday hold talks with the VVD, Christian Democrat and Labour leaders to assess the chances of forming a new coalition between the three parties.

On Tuesday, talks on the 'purple plus' option between the two Liberal parties VVD and D66, Labour and GroenLinks stranded over economic policy.

Earlier attempts to form a right-wing cabinet involving the anti-Islam PVV also failed.

Labour leader Job Cohen has already said he does not support the right-centre-left option because two of the parties involved (Labour and the CDA) lost seats in the general election.

Failure

If this option fails, Rosenthal has three options, the Financieele Dagblad said in its coverage of the coalition formation process.

He can resign from the job, advise the queen to force through one of the three majority coalitions which have already been investigated, or he can look into the formation of a minority cabinet.

Given the economic problems facing the country, a minority cabinet is unlikely, the paper said.

In the last 10 years the Dutch government has either completely collasped, or been unable to form a majority and actually be effective, at least 5 times. With all the talk and issues about integration and adapting to Dutch society and culture, many of us are wondering exactly what we need to adapt to. Perhaps it is a good idea for the Dutch to figure out first what the country and its people actually represent - before we all adapt to a society that we would not even choose to live in. And yes here I am talking about Mr. Wilders and his PVV. If that will be the new government me, my family and my business will emmigrate. This is really a disgrace. Think about it.

If PVV goes to leading coalition then all international organizations should consider to leave Netherlands as hate and racism and xenophobia are not tolerable by their statutes. How can they operate and exist in country where their core values (and I'm talking about the universal human rights) are ignored by the Dutch politicians?

I second long time expat!

On the otherhand, I do not think lot of people like to have PVV in the government. As PvDA mentioned more than once they will not have the coalition with CDA, how come VVD or Mr Rosenthal still cannot get the point? If CDA and PvDA both parties can work out, we didn't need to have the new election in early this month... Lets get some new blood for the government, it should not be that bad to have the "paars plus coalition"!
