Amsterdam city centre on Unesco world heritage list

Amsterdam’s historic canal rings will be included on the Unesco World Heritage listing a Unesco official reportedly said on Monday.

Deputy director Kishore Rao was speaking at the official announcement of the inclusion of the Wadden Sea on the heritage list, the Parool reports.
Amsterdam city council has been keen to be included on the list, which officials think will boost tourism.
‘Amsterdam’s image will hopefully change. The emphasis will be more on culture than sex and drugs and rock and roll,’ Walther Schoonenberg of the city centre friends association, told the paper.
But others say it will hinder the city’s development and turn the city centre into a museum rather than a thriving, creative metropolis.
