Welfare benefit claims rise

The number of people claiming basic welfare benefit (bijstand) rose 10,000 in the first three months of this year, compared with the year earlier period, the national statistics office CBS said on Monday.


Some 290,000 people were claiming the benefit by the end of March.
The sharpest rise in claims was among young men, who often have not had a long enough working history to qualify for unemployment benefit (ww) the CBS said.
