Utrecht rubbish collectors’ strike extended again

The strike by rubbish collectors and street cleaners in Utrecht has been extended for a furthe two days until May 9, union officials have announced.

The strike, which began on May 1, has already been extended by two days.
The city council’s cleaning service is on strike in support of a 1.5% pay offer. The employers want a pay freeze but have offered a 1% of annual salary one-off bonus.
The arrival of the Giro d’Italia cycle race in Utrecht on May 9 will not be affected by the strike, union officials said. ‘We do not plan to disrupt it,’ the spokesman said, adding that pavements and the race route will be freed of rubbish. ‘That is how we can show how valuable our work is.’
In Amsterdam, the city’s cleaning department is due to begin a week long strike on Thursday. The council has decided not to take legal action in an effort to have the strike banned.
