Tripoli crash survivor to be flown back the Netherlands SaturdayFriday 14 May 2010 The nine-year-old boy who survived Wednesday's air crash in Tripoli is to be flown back to the Netherlands on Saturday, Ed Kronenburg, who is in charge of the Dutch crash team in Libya said on Friday. Libya has made an ambulance aircraft available and the boy, named Ruben, will leave during the morning, accompanied by his aunt and uncle. A Libyan doctor will also be on board the flight to bring Dutch medical staff up to date with his treatment so far. Privacy The Telegraaf newspaper caused disbelief on Friday morning by publishing a short phone conversation made with the boy via a doctor's mobile phone. Deputy prime minister AndrĂ© Rouvoet called the paper 'shameless'. In a statement, the newspaper stressed the reporter had said nothing about the accident or the fact the boy's parents were killed. Ruben 'is a symbol of life in this enormous tragedy,' the paper said. 'It was never our intention to abuse his situation.' The 70 Dutch nationals killed in the crash which left 103 people dead came from all over the country. © DutchNews.nl Readers' Comments |

Yep, pretty sick to publish the phone conversation. I was surprised how much media was surrounding his bed although we are talking about a somewhat backwards country, it has to be said.
A single reported photo of the boy would have sufficed. Not repeated camera flashes, videotaping and recorded phone conversations. An absolute disgrace.
Sounds like Telegraaf are making excuses. They should just make an unreserved apology.
By Chris | 14 May 2010 3:42 PMThoughts and prayers extended from our family to the family of Ruben. We know something similar to the rough future that is ahead but it is in your love that this boy with once again rejoyce in life.
By Joe | 14 May 2010 9:07 PMPoor boy, I hope they leave him alone. Isn't it enough that he has lost his parents and brother too? Can the press find some humanity and give him the space to come to terms with his loss?
By cookie | 14 May 2010 9:41 PMIn disaster times, It become more important, as affected people rely on relatives and friends in other areas and/or abroad to support . for most Libyans Ruben is a family member and his image will be keept in our minds and we will stand with him no matter how far he is from us.
