PVV, GroenLinks angry at tv boss voting advice

The left-wing green party GroenLinks and anti-Islam PVV are angry with the head of broadcasting company KRO for urging members not to vote for the two parties.

KRO chairman Koen Becking sent a letter to the organisation’s 460,000 members warning them that the PVV and GroenLinks want to abolish the current broadcaster membership system.
PVV MP Martin Bosma accused the KRO of using taxpayers’ money to influence political behaviour. The party wants to abolish the Dutch world service and reduce the number of public tv channels from three to one.
Reform

GroenLinks leader Femke Halsema described the comments as ’embarrassing’. She said her party wantsto reform the current three-channel system and create a two channel public broadcasting set-up without advertising.
At the moment, the Netherlands has three public tv channels and airtime is allocated to over a dozen public broadcasters on the basis of how many members they have. The system is partly funded by the taxpayer and partly by advertising income.
Most political parties have proposed cutting the amount of money put into public broadcasting in their election manifestos.
