Over a million people get housing benefit

Monday 31 May 2010

Over 1.1 million of the Netherlands' six million households received government money to help pay their rent in 2008, new figures from the national statistics office CBS show.

In total, the government spent €2bn subsidising the housing of low income households. Single people, pensioners and single parent families were the most likely to claim the benefit.

Some three million households live in rented accommodation, with rents averaging €440 a month. On average, housing benefit claimants were given €145 a month.
