FC Twente wins premier league title

FC Twente took the first premier league title in the club’s history on Sunday with a 0-2 win over NAC of Breda. Amsterdam club Ajax was one point behind following a 4-1 win over NEC Nijmegen.

‘This is just fantastic,’ Twente coach Steve McClaren said after the final whistle went. ‘What a fantastic group of players. They deserve it, the players, the staff, the supporters, they all deserve it. What a performance.’
The ANWB warned motorists to stay away from the A1 on Monday night because thousands of celebrating Twente fans had blocked the motorway in both directions.
It was ‘chaos’ on the roads as the open-topped bus carrying the players moved at less than 10km an hour back to Enschede, a spokesman for the motoring organisation said.
Ajax last took the national title in the 2003/04 season under Ronald Koeman.
