Englishman wins first stage of Giro d’Italia – in Amsterdam

English cyclist Bradley Wiggins won the first stage of the Giro d’Italia cycle race in Amsterdam on Saturday.


The round Italy race kicked off in the Dutch capital with an 8.4 km time trial around the city centre.
On Sunday, the second stage sees the riders head from Amsterdam for Utrecht and on Monday from the capital for Middelburg.
Some 150,000 people turned up in damp weather to watch the opening event of the race. There were no serious incidents, the organisers told news agency ANP.
