Dutch prepared to pay €47 to win the World Cup

The Dutch would be prepared to pay an average of €47 to make sure the Netherlands wins the World Cup, according to research into the economic benefits of football by financial services group ING.

The figure is a big increase on two years ago, when the Dutch valued the European title at €30. The fans with the biggest pockets are the Brazilians who would spent an average of €813 to win the title, ING said.
‘The better Oranje performs, the better it is for the economy,’ says ING economist Charles Kalshoven. ‘The World Cup has an influence on work, the retail sector, consumer spending and consumer confidence.’
For example, the Dutch expect to spend over €60m on fan material, 18% of fans eat ready made meals on match days and 15% will drink more alcohol, the ING research shows.
And 18% of football fans would go on a bread and water diet for six days if it would guarantee the Netherlands the world title.
