Bin men’s strike continues as rubbish piles mount up

The strike by bin men in Amsterdam and Utrecht is set to continue for another week at least, the unions confirmed on Monday evening.

City council refuse collection workers are on strike in support of their claim for a 2.75% pay rise, spread over two years.
‘A bin man takes home between €1,350 and €1,550 a month. We are talking about a net pay rise of between €37 and €44 a month, or 24 cents an hour,’ union spokesman Rob Rumkorf told the Parool on Monday.
Talks between the unions and employers, who have offered a one-off 1% bonus, are continuing this week.
Officials say there is still no danger to public health from the piles of rubbish in the streets, largely due to the low temperatures. Many shops already employ private collection services to take away their waste on a daily basis.
