Paper tickets to go in Amsterdam on June 3

Paper tickets will be a thing of the past on buses and trams in the greater Amsterdam area from June 3, according to the Telegraaf.

The paper says acting transport minister Camiel Eurlings has approved the switch to the public transport smart card (ov-chipkaart) from June. The Amsterdam region is the second area of the country to abolish paper tickets. Rotterdam did so last year.
According to Amsterdam’s bus and tram service GVB, some 80% of the city’s public transport users already use the smart card. But only 55% of people outside the city currently do so, the Telegraaf said.
One condition for the switch is that passengers using the chip card should not, on average, pay more to use the buses and trams than they did when paper tickets were accepted.
