MPs to debate postal worker pay
MPs are to hold an emergency debate next week to discuss the lack of progress in improving postal worker pay and working conditions, Trouw reports on Friday.
Earlier this week it emerged new postal delivery firms such as Sandd and SelektMail have failed to make sure at least 14% of delivery staff are on a proper contract. In fact, just 111 of the 24,000 delivery workers at the budget companies have traditional contracts.
The government opened up the entire postal delivery market to competition last April on condition that the new firms took action on staff employment. Most workers are paid for each item of post they deliver and get no sick or holiday pay or pension contributions.

The debate has been demanded by the Labour party, which, Trouw points out, has its own post delivered by Sandd.
‘We made that contract a year ago when Sandd had good plans to employ staff on permanent contracts,’ MP Mei Li Vos told the paper. ‘We should now be looking for a new postal company.’
Sandd and SelektMail have gone to court to have the agreement overturned, saying they cannot afford to formally employ staff.
