Wintry weather accidents top 36,000

Over 36,000 people were treated for injuries received during this winter’s long period of snow and ice, more than eight times the average, the consumer safety organisation said on Tuesday.

Three-quarters of those injured fell on streets and pavements, half of them ended up with broken bones and 15% were admitted to hospital.
The cost of the accidents to society is put at €220m – €90m for medical treatment and the rest for missed work.
The organisation wants local councils to improve their snow clearance programmes and encourage householders to keep the pavements free of snow and ice.
