Utrecht football supporters sent home

Amsterdam police sent some 700 fans of FC Utrecht back home by train before Sunday afternoon’s game against Ajax because of anti-semitic chanting, news agency ANP reported.

Despite several warnings and the distribution of flyers ordering fans to behave, the chanting continued, leading police to order them home.
In 2002, Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen also ordered Utrecht fans home after they refused to stop anti-Jewish chants.
Amsterdam club Ajax is popularly seen as having ‘Jewish roots’, although this is disputed by many. In the 1970s, supporters began highlighting this Jewish identity and adopted Jewish symbols such as the Star of David.
