Sparkling wine sales soar
Friday 26 March 2010
The sale of sparkling wine such as prosecco and cava soared by 49% in the Netherlands last year, according to new figures from the wine marketing board.
In 2008, one in five bottles of sparkling wine bought in the Netherlands was the Italian product prosecco, but that has now risen to one in three, the board says in Friday's Volkskrant.
The Dutch drank an average of 21.7 litres of wine per head of the population last year, with French wine accounting for 36% of the total.
