Southern CDA youth want Leers as leader
Thursday 25 March 2010
Gerd Leers, the former mayor of Maastricht who stepped down because of a scandal over his holiday home in Bulgaria, is the best man to lead the Christian Democrats, according to youth wings of the party in Limburg and Brabant provinces.
´Leers is charismatic, new-fashioned and unifying,´ the youth divisions say in a letter currently circulating in CDA circles.
Prime minister and current party leader Jan Peter Balkenende has been attacked by grass roots activists across the country, who blame him for the party´s poor showing in the polls.
´The prospect of going into an election with Balkenende so that we can lose and then dump him legally is not exactly motivating to get out there and campaign,´the letter stated. ´But it is not yet too late.´
Leers has already let it be known he is available for a job in national politics but does not want to be included in the CDA´s list of potential MPs.
