Rwandan ambassdor applies for asylum
Friday 19 March 2010
Rwanda's ambassador to the Netherlands Jean Pierre Bizimana has applied for political asylum in Ireland, the NRC reports on Friday.
Sources have told the paper he was under pressure for failing to provide Rwanda with enough information about the president's political enemies in the Netherlands.
A Dutch foreign ministry spokesman confirmed Bizimana had left the country. It is unclear why he has surfaced in Ireland.
Under EU rules, refugees are supposed to apply for asylum in the first European country they reach.
