No re-vote in Rotterdam, despite concerns

While there were some incidents during local voting in Rotterdam which broke the law, the city does not need to hold a new election, officials said on Wednesday evening.

A special committee was called into action to investigate claims of vote rigging and other irregularities.

The committee said that some 2,400 reported incidents could have affected the outcome of the election. However, this was not enough to actually change the allocation of seats in the 45-seat local council.

It was therefore pointless to investigate all the incidents because the final result would be unaffected.

Recount

The vote was already recounted because of the close results. Labour emerged narrowly ahead of the local populist party Leefbaar Rotterdam. Both parties have 14 seats on the council.

Leefbaar leader Marco Pastors said on Wednesday evening he accepted the committee's report and was dropping his objections to the vote.

This means work can now begin on forming a new coalition administration to govern the port city.
