Labour in clear lead in latest poll

The effect of the appointment of Job Cohen as Labour’s election campaign leader is continuing to boost the party’s fortunes in the opinion polls, with a new poll by Synovate giving the social democrats 33 seats.

That is an increase of seven on the party’s standing a week ago, before Wouter Bos resigned and the Amsterdam mayor was announced as his successor.
In second place are the Christian Democrats, who have gone up one seat to 28, despite continuing unease about the performance of party leader and prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende.
Geert Wilders’ anti-Islam PVV is down one seat in third place at 23.
