Green light for teenage drinking crackdown

Wednesday 10 March 2010

MPs have given health minister Ab Klink the go ahead to proceed with legislation aimed at cracking down on teenage drinking, Nos tv reports.

A majority of MPs said the measures are not controversial - meaning Klink can go ahead with his plans despite the pending election.

MPs will vote on a list of over 300 issues deemed controversial on Thursday. Since the cabinet's collapse, ministers are only supposed to act in a caretaker role and need parliament's backing to process legislation.

The amendments to current drinking laws will give local authorities the right to increase the age limit for the sale of beer and wine from 16 to 18. The rules will also let councils clamp down on happy hours and ban young teenagers from going to bars.

In British Columbia (Canada) you can get a (learners) drivers license at the age of 16. Drinking is allowed from the age of 18 or 19. In the Netherlands it's the other way around. First we learn to drink and than we start driving. I like the Canadian way a whole lot better. This doesn't mean we should give drivers licenses to 16 year-olds in the Netherlands!

whilst I do think that 16 is an ok age for trying beer/wine - we all know that you need to employ a bit of psychology in setting age limits. Put it at 21 and you will get the 18-20year olds experimenting and probably passing the litmus test.

Put it at 18 and it's the 16-17 year olds that then fall into this difficult to detect area.

Having a legal drinking age of 16 is basically inviting all those of 14 and above to try drinking legally. If you're a big dutch unit at 14 years old (which many of them are!) or you're a 14 year old girl dolled up a wee bit, you will pass for 16.

I'm afraid I may sound like an CDA spokesman when I say: increasing the age of drinking to 18 in NL would help quite a lot....
