Elections: Labour, populists tie in Rotterdam

Local populist party Leefbaar Rotterdam is calling for a recount in the port city after it and the Labour party tied on 14 seats each.

Labour lost some 8% of its support and Leefbaar Rotterdam was virtually unchanged. But local party campaign leader Marco Pastoors told a tv debate after the vote he wanted a recount because of allegations of interference in some polling stations.
Mayor Achmed Abutaleb said he took the allegations extremely seriously but pointed out the definitive Rotterdam vote will not be known until Friday.
Labour’s vote is just 0.2 percentage point ahead of Leefbaar. Leefbaar Rotterdam has been in opposition for the past four years but was part of the coalition from 2002 to 2006.
