Average retirement age edges up

Efforts to persuade people not to stop work early appear to be paying off, with the average retirement age rising to 62 in 2007, the national statistics office said on Friday.

‘Between 2004 and 2006, 18,000 people a year retired before they reached the age of 60, but that fell to just 8,000 in 2007,’ the organisation said.
The average retirement age had been 61 for years.
Since 2007, the government has further stepped up its efforts to phase out early retirement.
