AH supermarket goes cash-free in evening

Friday 26 March 2010

An Albert Heijn supermarket in Kaatsheuvel has become the first in the country to ban cash transactions after 6pm.

Branch manager Piet den Hartog told local paper BN/De Stem he hoped the measure would reduce the risk of an armed robbery. 'The less cash we have, the smaller the chance of a robbery,' he was quoted as saying.

A spokesman for the supermarket group said there are no plans to take the ban nationwide. The store is run by a franchisee and it is up to him what steps he takes, the spokesman said.

Marqt (food shop) have two shops, one in Amsterdam and one in Haarlem, and they do not take any cash at all - only card transactions all day every day.

What's the fuzz about cashless shopping. I do that for more than 10 years. For drawing cash Y O U are charged, if you use you visa-plastic the shop pays for the transaction' besides earning points, I never know in advance how much I will spend. Just make sure your account balance is back to zero before due date. I travel to various parts of this planet with only my beloved plastic and a few coins for tips. Internet-banking is the way to go and sooner or later we all will be a cashless society anyway for our own safety. Sorry thugs and beggars.

AH needs to hire more mature workers. The workers have to put customer goods in a bag. Customers have to have a choice for plastic or paper bag.
The present plastic bags are too thin and easily torn.

And hey, there is something called Pizza Crust, Eggnog, and Bread Crump. Who am I kidding? Have you ever seen what people eat here?

So for a foreigner it's already quite complicated to go to the supermarket since they don't accept any visa or visa electron, which is what is used in many other countries, and one has to use cash. And now one cannot even use cash after 6 ? Isn't this supposed to be the inter-connected era ? I can buy anything from anywhere in the internet with a credit card, but I can't buy some groceries from the supermarket next door after 6 ??

Next there will be now cashiers...they are not needed..all they do is pass the product over the computer. No customer service in the Netherlands.
