Agnes Kant quits as Socialist Party leader

Thursday 04 March 2010

Agnes Kant, leader of the Socialist Party, has resigned following the party's poor showing in the local elections.

In a statement, Kant said that her departure was connected to the 'poor election results and the low opinion poll rating' and her own performance as figurehead of the party.

An opinion poll on Wednesday said the SP would lose 14 of its 25 seats if there was a general election. The party also lost a lot of seats in the local vote.

Kant took the party leadership over from the popular Jan Marijnissen, who stood down two years ago for health reasons.

Marijnissen told reporters he was not available to replace Kant. 'I think there should be a new generation in charge,' he said.
