Wine and spirit shops to film young customers

Thursday 18 February 2010

Hundreds of wine and spirit shops are to begin filming their customers in an effort to stop the under 16s buying beer and wine, website nu.nl reports on Thursday.

Members of the wine and spirits shop association say they are so pleased with the results of a trial using cameras that the experiment will be rolled out nationwide.

Photos taken of customers by a remote-controlled camera are scanned by staff at a control centre in Breda. If a customer is deemed too young they will be turned away. If there is reason to doubt their age, they will be asked for ID, nu.nl says.

Customers who refuse to be filmed will not be allowed to buy anything.

Nu.nl does not say why wine shop owners cannot simply ask for ID without resorting to camera images, nor what criteria staff will use to determine if a customer is too young.

hardly surprising, NL does have the dubious honour of having the most intrusion into privacy (by way of cameras) in the world!

I thought that honour belonged to the UK?

Wasn't is Rockwell who sang, "I always feel like somebody's watching me."? I'm NOT in favor of underage drinking, but this is a clear message that the clerks cannot be trusted to verify a customer's ID properly. I think that the solution is to hire better clerks. There are certainly enough people who could use a job!

Bizarre job, these folks at the 'Control Centre'. Judging potential customes with unknown criteria, then making the report to the staff at the shops. Would seem like a spoof if it were not so troubling that the customers are not treated properly and just asked for identification. What is the difference, really, between this and a one-way mirror installed in the shop besides convenience for the shop? And would anyone shop in a place where people were hiding behind the one-way mirror?

are they going to start at the grocery stores too,, they should cos there are so many kids grabbing brewski's and wine and trying to get thru real quick, even during lunch time, also why are there so many under 18's who work in the stores allowed to HANDLE BOOZE,, IN THE Usa they have to call some one to scan it who are of drinking age?? would be interesting to see how the NL would handle such law, since most 16 yr olds are working to earn money for their status symbol toys and clothes, ***REM***
