Nursing homes report suicide attemptsThursday 11 February 2010 Dozens of people living in nursing homes commit, or try to commit suicide every year, according to research by the Dutch voluntary euthanasia society NVVE. Suicides or attempted suicides were reported In 44 of the 221 nursing homes covered by the NVVE survey. And in over half of nursing homes, staff said residents had told them they considered their life was at an end. Earlier this week, a group of older Dutch academics and politicians launched a campaign in support of assisted suicide for the over-70s. Under Dutch law, euthanasia can only be practised if the patient is suffering 'unbearable pain'. The doctor must be convinced the patient is making an informed choice and a second doctor must also give his or her opinion. © DutchNews.nl
It's not a big problem to find two doctors in Holland to sign this. A Nurse told me that you do not want to go into most Dutch nursing homes. She said most of them are "Awful places!". As far as I can see, if over 50, in pain, disabled, ill, in need of help... it's Sorry you get nothing but abuse ... enough to drive anyone to suicide. By Gerard | February 11, 2010 3:28 PM

It appears there is a sinister campaign to get rid of old people who need care. The answer is to provide the care; proper loving care, not extinguish life. The very limited experience I had with Dutch healthcare gave me a shock as to how uncaring and businesslike they are. Caring is a vocation not a business, and until this attitude changes in nursing homes, older people wiil be under pressure to "go die".
This is pure and simple murder, for the sake of getting rid of what is deemed a burden on society. Media attention to such statistics are an attempt to reinforce the stereotype that old persons are useless. SHAME!
