Latest Iceland repayment offer in trouble
Tuesday 23 February 2010
Icelandic opposition parties have rejected a compromise deal put forward by the Netherlands and Britain for the repayment of €3.8bn, the Volkskrant reports on Tuesday.
Even though the new plan includes variable interest rates, the opposition parties say it is still too high and that negotiations should be reopened.
The support of the opposition parties is needed to call off the referendum on an earlier deal, planned for March 6.
The Netherlands and Britain lent Iceland the money to repay their citizens who lost money when internet bank Icesave collapsed.
But the repayment plan has divided the country, which has a population of just 300,000. Opponents say it will cripple the island's economy for years to come.
