Italian wins World Press Photo
Friday 12 February 2010
This year's World Press Photo prize has been won by Italian photographer Pietro Masturzo for a photograph of women shouting from a roof in Teheran, the Amsterdam-based jury said on Friday.
The photograph is one of a series made on June 24, shortly after the controversial Iranian presidential election.
Jury chair Ayperi Karabuda Ecer said on the organisation website: "The photo shows the beginning of something, the beginning of a huge story. It adds perspectives to news. It touches you both visually and emotionally, and my heart went out to it immediately.'
A total 5,847 photographs from 128 different countries were entered for this year's awards.
