Eight taken to hospital after metro crash
Saturday 20 February 2010
Eight people have been taken to hospital following an underground crash between two metro trains in Amsterdam.
In total, 37 people were injured in the accident, which took place near the Wibautstraat metro station in the late afternoon.
It is not yet clear what caused the crash, which apparently happened when a full metro train ploughed into the back of an empty one, the paper said.
All metro services have been suspended and the main road between Amstel station and the Wibaustraat metro station has been closed to traffic.
Some 30 minutes before the crash, the city's central station was closed to the public after smoke was seen on platform 2. Tram services from the station were cancelled. The two incidents are not related, the Telegraaf reported.
