Dutch cinemas boycott new Burton film

Monday 15 February 2010

Dutch cinemas are refusing to show the new Tim Burton film Alice in Wonderland because of a row with Disney over the DVD.

Disney is planning to release the film on DVD just 12 weeks after the cinema premier, five weeks earlier than in traditional agreements.

The cinema owners say this does not give them enough time to make money of the film from big screen showings.

A boycott is also being considered in the UK.

And what to they plan to do if Disney and it's film subsidiaries decided to boycott Holland? File for BANKRUPTCY.

This film has Johnny Depp and Lewis Carrol! They'll make more in 12 weeks than with the other insipid crap that's in the theaters now.

Well...if you want to watch it in 3D you MUST go to the cinema anyway...that s a warranty for he theaters...after Avatar everybody is kinda obsessed with 3D stuff!

If nothing else, they could at least release the IMAX 3-D version.

I remember Burton had some sort of disagreement with "Charlie and the chocolate factory" writer. His versions are a bit much for the young children but then the "Wizard of Oz" was pretty scary as a child.

I find it strange that Disney would release the movie in DVD when Europe is the last to be able to get the films in order to show in theaters. The Netherlands has a point and I think all of Europe should do the boycott when Disney plays dirty.

At the end of the day Disney has a stake in this as well as I am sure they do not want to damage their earnings from the boxoffice. So I highly doubt they have done this without prior thinking.

@bobsocks you can't watch it in 3d on the DVD. people would go to the cinema to see it regardless if it's on dvd or not. surely they would make enough money in the first 12 weeks. unbelievable.

One cinema in Haarlem seems to be planning to show it. I asked when I saw the posters.

By Gerard | February 16, 2010 2:04 PM

grant: I agree, the 3D aspect of the film is the attraction that will bring people to the theaters regardless of when the DVD is released.

I think Disney should boycott NL. No movies in theaters, and no DVDs for sale in shops. That Dutch market is so inconsequential that Disney won't miss the money. Then let's see what the theater owners will do when the DVD black market grows, because that's all that would happen.
