Thursday 28 January 2010
The Netherlands is to take a leading role in helping Yemen develop its judicial and legal system, news agency ANP reports on Thursday.
The decision was taken at a meeting of foreign ministers from the Group of Eight leading industrial nations and Middle East states in London on Wednesday. The summit was called following the failed Christmas day terror attack by a Nigerian linked to al Qaeda in Yemen.
The Netherlands has been involved in aid work in Yemen for 32 years and spends some €19m a year on projects in the country. That total will not go up despite the new mission, aid minister Bert Koenders said. The project is not about money, but about the expertise and knowledge which the Netherlands can deliver, he was quoted as saying.
According to the BBC, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told conference bringing unity and stability to Yemen was an urgent national priority.
